German violin Anon. ca. 1870-1900

An interesting violin probably made closer to 1900, with a lovely oil varnish. The violin projects and speaks better within smaller concert spaces, however still has a voice that stands out within an orchestra. In a lovely state of preservation, the instrument can be played in Vienna by prior appointment only.

Violin by Lajos Konya Jr.

A fine violin by Lajos Konya Jr. The name Konya is famous in Hungary for a distinguished line of violins makers. First, there was Istvan Konya who died only a few years ago in his 80s. Some of his instruments are currently owned and played by members of the New York Philharmonic (Hungarian players in the know!). The elder Konya had two sons, both of whom are important makers today -- one emigrated to Italy (Stefan or Stefano Konya); the other (Lajos), has remained in Hungary where is a leading maker in Central and Eastern Europe. Lajos Konya Jr. is the youngest follower of the Konya family tradition. He studied this art in Liszt Ferenc Music Academy and has gained practical knowledge of the process of making violins in his grandfather's, father's, and uncle's workshops. He has also visited other Hungarian and foreign workshops to gain more experience in this trade. The work of both of the Hungarian Konyas reflects their individual styles and way of shaping instruments. Today their instruments are found in Italy, the Far East, the USA, Switzerland and Hungary.

Violin by Johann Sattler, Wien, 1874

A rare violin by Johann Sattler, Vienna, 1874. The violin has a strong voice, with a bold bass range that holds in all positions. Cosmetic flaws include several minor abrasions in the back plate, none which affect the tone. The instrument is on loan to a student of violin performance in Bregenz, Austria, where it is being used actively for concerts, and can be visited and played by prior appointment only.
